We are excited to present our latest original puppet theatre production of “The Song of the Swan” playing at Curly Willow Farm in Grindrod from July 10th to 20th.

A story of friendship between a girl and a swan, told with puppets, actor/puppeteers, music and sumptuous sets. Part true and part fairytale, “The Song of the Swan” celebrates the magnificent Trumpeters, who have regenerated in numbers after coming close to extinction, and who grace the waters in our region during the winter months. For adults and children alike.

In the world of puppets, anything can happen! Tiny beings are brought to life by human companions who share the stage, thus creating a mesmerizing expression of vulnerability and wonder. Expert hands weave movements that blur the lines between real and imagined.

Acclaimed director Treena Stubel along with playwright and musical director Cathy Stubington bring to life musical adaptations from Pavane pour une Infante Defunte by Maurice. Sarah May Redmond uses the harp to lull the audience into something akin to a dream; a shared memory. Professional actors/puppeteers Sarah May Redmond, Rennan Bankowski, Glitter Esquivias, Lucas Myers and Cathy Stubington use delicate hands to transport the audience to a time when the fate of trumpeter swans was hanging by a few tenuous threads. A story of hope as we navigate our way in these tumultuous times.

More about the show

The story of a girl named Jesse and a Trumpeter Swan named Only, who become close friends. Through their friendship, they find out about migratory ways of life and how all creatures need to feel at home in the habitat that is suitable to them.

Trumpeters Swans were almost extinct by the late 1800’s but are no longer considered to be endangered. We see them near here, flying over, and in the Shuswap River, during the winter months.

Development of a puppet play about trumpeter swans

A group of artists assembled in April 2024 at Curly Willow Farm, to experiment with swan puppets and begin to get ready for the future performances.
